The initialing of the peace agreement with Azerbaijan on August 8, 2025 was made possible thanks to preceding efforts. August 8 did not “fall out of the sky,” but was the culmination of bilateral work, and the participation of US President Donald Trump played a significant role. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is on vacation and heads the ruling Civil Contract party’s electoral list for the parliamentary election in Armenia on June 7, announced this during an election campaign Tuesday in Meghradzor village of Kotayk Province.

According to Pashinyan, peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan was established on last August 8 with the support and participation of Trump. He explained that this happened for one reason: in late March 2025, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced the end of negotiations on agreeing on the text of the peace agreement.

“That is, we already had the agreed text of the peace agreement, which was ready for signing. After that, my first working visit to Turkey took place; I left for Istanbul and announced our strategy. After that, a bilateral meeting with the president of Azerbaijan took place in Abu Dhabi,” Pashinyan recalled.

He added that Armenia must have the capabilities and skills to live in its own environment without external assistance. Meanwhile, just a few years ago, Armenia did not communicate directly with either Azerbaijan or Turkey, and when it was necessary to communicate with Azerbaijan, it was done through third countries.

“After some time, we [i.e. Armenia] felt that something was wrong. Then we realized that neither our messages were reaching the right place, nor were Azerbaijan’s responses. Moreover, this was not always done maliciously, since there are nuances, and signals are transmitted in a distorted form. Therefore, we decided that we should live in our own environment and solve our issues independently, to the extent possible. However, this does not mean that we are isolating ourselves from the international community," the Armenian premier concluded.
