The UN has urged Israel to take measures to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip and condemned signs of ethnic cleansing in the Palestinian territories, including the occupied West Bank.

A new report by the UN Human Rights Office says that Israel's actions in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023 have been accompanied by gross violations of international law and in many cases may amount to war crimes and other crimes against humanity.

In the document, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called on Israel to ensure the implementation of a 2024 ruling by the UN International Court of Justice, according to which the country must take measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.

According to Turk, Israel must immediately ensure that its military does not commit acts of genocide, as well as take all measures to prevent and punish incitement to genocide.

The report covers the period from October 7, 2023—the moment of the unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel, which began the war in Gaza—to May 2025.

The document also condemns the gross violations committed by Palestinian armed groups, both during the initial attack and after it, including acts that may amount to war crimes.
